Episode 2.05 “Second Opinion”

This episode finally lets a few shoes drop — things that have been hanging out there since the beginning of the show, when Kiera got zapped with the Transmooker Device and blasted back at 88mph to 2013.

So, the question hanging out there from the get-go: how does Kiera cope with the knowledge that any move she makes could create a completely different timeline in which her son Sam may never exist? What if she changes enough history to destroy her life in 2077? Completely wipe it out? It’s something that’s been touched on before, especially with Alec asking Kiera what might be the telling question: what if her 2077 isn’t the best one? What if making changes now actually makes for a better future to inhabit?

Turns out, this has been brewing for a while, and it’s exacerbated by the fact that it’s Sam’s birthday, and Kiera is on the verge of a mental break because this is all finally coming to a head. Just as Dillon gets fired and a new inspector takes over in order to ferret out the Liber8 mole in the office. Wha-huh?

Guess it was bound to happen. The department needs a fall guy for Travis’ escape and all the blowing-things-up shenanigans, so this isn’t a surprise. The surprise comes in where Dillon ends up…

In the meantime, Gardiner is convinced Kiera is the mole. And even when files show up on Betty’s computer that implicate the IT tech, Kiera is still Gardiner’s target.

Kiera, however, is having issues of her own, for when she outright attacks Gardiner, the supersuit fires off a holographic psychologist in the form of Dr. Emil Hamilton  Felix Gaeta Dr. Fairweather, who takes the suit off-line and cuts off all communication with Alec. Meaning Alec can’t build a new digital trail while the Vancouver PD are looking into her files to check the discrepancies regarding her family — of whom the files make no mention. So Kiera is in an even more precarious position because not only is her “Section 6” cover about to be blown wide open, it’s happening at the same time Kiera is cracking up over her son’s birthday and the fact that she may never see him again and might even cause circumstances in which he would never exist.

It’s a bit of a head trip for her. Although I have a hard time believing she’d be able to carry on so much of her conversations with Fairweather out in the open like she does. It really makes her look like a crazy person. At least she holds a phone when she talks with Alec.

Fairweather, of course, still thinks it’s 2077 and is trying to figure why Kiera’s about to lose it. Because he figures she’s abandoned her family and gone rogue or something. So when he tries to make contact with his case officer, and isn’t able to connect with the network (because, you know, time travel and stuff), he’s out of his element. It’s a lot like watching the holographic doctor during the first season of Star Trek: Voyager as he learns how to deal with new situations. The look on his face says a lot.

Alec, meantime, takes the deal with Kellog after seeing the massive wonderful Batcave that’s been outfitted for the new SadTech. With conditions, of course. And along those lines, Jason hands over the stolen plans to the Death Star Transmooker Device. And he’s able to locate a Trojan program on Betty’s computer that makes it look like Liber8 simply set up the tech to look like the mole.

…. when she actually is the mole. Got to admit, I didn’t see that coming, although I figured it wasn’t going to be Gardiner because everyone was suspecting him.

Best line: “This is the year 2013, and they use these to dry their hands.”
