CBS Lets SUPERGIRL Fly

Banner_ComingSoon

CBS has officially released this first look at Supergirl, and reaction on the internet has been mixed — ranging from love to hate, with not much in between. Some think it looks much better than Man of Steel in terms of tone and humor, while others complain it feels too much like The Devil Wears Prada.

There are definite call-backs to earlier versions of the Superman mythos on film — the plane rescue, the media frenzy, the clumsy persona as a disguise. Melissa Benoist seems to having quite a bit of fun with this, and there’s even a nice bit about the whole Girl/Woman thing, which is really still a hangup for some people.

Take a look and tell us what you think.

Take-Away Points:

  • Jimmy (James) Olsen looks to be older and more seasoned than we’ve seen in other iterations. The fact that he’s black is less important than the fact that he’s not clumsy and awkward.
  • Cat Grant is not really Cat Grant.
  • The costume design is really close to that of the 1984 movie with Helen Slater.
  • Looks like Slater and Dean Cain are going to play Kara’s foster parents.
  • It appears that Superman pulls Kara out of the rocket and takes her to the Danvers family.
  • Hank Henshaw is probably not going to be mistaken for Superman.
  • Greg Berlanti really likes the “My name is ______” motif.
  • Why are they pronouncing her name wrong?

The costume looks much better in motion, and it’s encouraging to see this show doesn’t have the GrimDark52 filter applied.

  • It gave me chills. I hope it lives up to its trailer.
