CAPTAIN MARVEL Gets Writing Team

Marvel has now made it official: Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauvre will write the screenplay for Captain Marvel.

Perlman co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy with director James Gunn, and she will also be back for its sequel. LeFauve co-wrote Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out, which is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month before its release in theaters on June 19.

Rumors have been swirling around the project for a while, with Agent Carter scribe Tara Butters at one point being among those under consideration.

According to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Danvers was originally set to make an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. She had a small role in an early draft of the script, but didn’t make the final cut for a number of reasons. “It didn’t feel like the time,” Feige said. “We didn’t want to introduce her fully formed flying in a costume before you knew who she was or how she came to be.”

Buried in the report at Deadline, however, is the note that Perlman is also on board to write a Black Widow movie. However, since there’s no word of that project in the pipeline, it’s likely a reference back to Perlman’s early association with a Black Widow project prior to her work on GOTG. In recent days, Scarlett Johannson has indicated that her contract remains in flux as a result of her character’s popularity, and that talks of a Black Widow movie are once again part of that ongoing discussion.

The project currently has no director or star set. The story will focus on Carol Danvers, who was introduced in 1968 as an Air Force major who got her powers in an accident involving Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel. Danvers debuted as Ms. Marvel in 1977 and took on the Captain Marvel identity in 2012, the seventh Marvel character to claim the code name.

Captain Marvel is set for release November 2, 2018.
