Berlanti Confirms BOOSTER GOLD

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, producer Greg Berlanti — selected as the magazine’s TV Producer of the Year — confirms that he’s producing Booster Gold for Warner Bros.

Rumors have long been brewing over a Booster Gold project, the most recent being that it would be a series on Syfy. The internet was also abuzz with the notion that Firefly‘s Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion would team up for a Booster Gold/Blue Beetle project, but that’s likely just been the “what if?” water cooler discussions fans have on a regular basis.

Berlanti said, “I’m attached to a few films [at Warner Bros.] now, and one, Booster Gold, is a DC property. Zack Stentz, who wrote an episode of Flash last year, just got the job, so he’s writing the script now. I’d probably direct that, or I would want to.”

That Stentz is writing was also the subject of speculation after he sat with Kevin Smith for an episode of Fat Man on Batman. Stentz has written for Fringe, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Thor, X-Men:First Class, and also wrote “The Runaway Dinosaur” episode of The Flash that Smith directed.

Talking about how he got the job writing the episode, Stentz said, “I was working with Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg and and Sarah Schechter, the kind of amazing trio that make that amazing machine run. And we were working on a different project that I’m not really allowed to talk about right now —” at which point Smith and his co-host Marc Bernardin claimed knowledge of the project, which turns out to be the Booster Gold film.

This also means that Schechter is attached to the project as well, and if it’s done right, could prove to be Berlanti Productions’ entry point into the DC Cinematic Universe in a big way, especially given the shaky ground the current Snyderverse stands on with the suits at WB.

When asked whether he’d be up for a Feige-like role in the DCU, Berlanti told THR, “It’s never even really come up. Peter [Roth, president of Warner Bros. TV] knows how much I love the characters, and I like being part of this universe in any way that they’ll all allow and are interested in me being a part. That’s the truth.”

Berlanti’s co-producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg have said in multiple interviews that their shows have gone through stages of earning additional source material from DC Comics as they progress. Certainly, the current crop of shows — Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Vixen, and Supergirl (which may get its second season on The CW instead of CBS) — have built on the mythology over the years, adding more characters and story lines as DC has permitted.

Could Booster Gold bring the Berlanti-verse to the big screen? When asked about the recently vacated director’s chair of The Flash, he responded, “No one’s discussed that with me, but I could never direct a Flash movie that Grant Gustin wasn’t the lead of. He’s my Flash.”
