Being Human: Every Hair Chunk Has A Silver Lining

Episode 306: “One Is Silver And The Other Pagan”

This week, let’s start by taking a look at our favorite living corpse. The first thought that comes to mind is…where the heck is Max!? I really like that floppy-haired kid. More Max time, less Nora time! Oh wait, back to Sally. Her role this week is reduced compared to weeks past. We haven’t seen as much interaction between her and Aidan either. Frankly, I think the show has suffered for it. More Max, more Sally-Aidan dance scenes!

Now that she can see people from her past, Sally visits her friend Bridget (remember, the one who hooked up with Danny?). Bridget’s brush with the supernatural led her to join a Wiccan coven. For some reason (psst, the reason is drama), Sally goes to a coven meeting where they attempt contact with the dead. The group is visited by two male ghosts, neither particularly well-mannered. When one of the ghosts possesses Bridget, Sally fights them off with iron. Afterwards, Sally encourages Bridget to forget about spirits and to move on with her life.

The most significant development with Sally this week, however, starts out mundanely enough. As Sally prepares for bed, she brushes her luscious head of hair, only for it to start falling out. A very large chunk with attached flesh lands in Sally’s hands. I’ve been reading and watching sci fi and horror since I was a kid, and I have three kids, 2 cats, and a dog. I’ve seen a lot of ickiness over the years. Sally’s chunk o’ hair made me queasy. Good job!

But let’s get to the real meat of the story: the Aidan-Erin-Nora hate triangle. Last we saw, Erin stood brandishing a stake over choking, bleeding Aidan. He tries to crawl away from her, she pulls him back, rolls him over as if to stake the guy. In pain and desperation, he does what any reasonable vampire would do…he kicks the fire out of her. Josh runs in to see Aidan incapacitated and bleeding on the ground, and he runs over to Erin.

At the hospital, Josh tells Aidan that Erin’s subsequent head injury isn’t good, and demands to know what the happened. Aidan lays it out for him, but neither one of them can grasp the why. Nora swoops in, refuses to hear Aidan’s side of the story, and threatens Aidan should Erin not pull through.

Later, Nora and Josh start a rational conversation about how events could have led to their present situation. Josh starts to put the pieces together: Liam was the one who found Erin, he wants all vampires dead, maybe Liam put her up to it? Nora leaves rationality far behind, asking Josh why he can’t just admit Aidan might have done something wrong; she also wonders if it came to it, which of them Josh’d choose, if he had to: Josh or Nora? So here’s the deal, Nora: you’re asking Josh to consider whether Aidan might have done something wrong; you need to be fair and ask the very same question of Erin. And why should Josh ever have to choose, Nora? He only ever will if you put him in that position.

Liam arrives at the hospital to visit Erin, but Josh stops him in the parking lot. Josh claims he knows that Liam had something to do with everything that went down, even though he can’t prove it, and warns Liam to stay away. Josh returns back to the hospital and shares a sweet scene with Nora, where he assures her that while Aidan is like a brother to him, he will always choose Nora. Those words will come back to bite him, I guarantee it.

While Josh and Nora have been at the hospital, Aidan has had a couple of significant female interactions. First, Blake, the fiery newbie vampire. Apparently, she followed Aidan to the hospital, found Kenny, and struck a deal. Kenny agreed to feed Blake until he turns eighteen, and Blake will turn him at that time. Kenny soon gets the short end of the stick, as Blake feeds too much off him and leaves him weak, tired and afraid. Aidan agrees to become Kenny’s maker instead, effectively cutting off Blake’s access to him, leading to one bitter bloodsucker.

Nora’s friend Cat also resurfaces, initially needing help with the plumbing at Nora’s old apartment. Aidan offers to help out. In the process, they discover a shared love of history. Cat later appears at the hospital, casserole and cookies in hand for Josh and Nora, and runs into Aidan again. Nora warns Aidan in no uncertain terms to stay away from both Erin and Cat, but Aidan has a history of making dumb choices about women. He asks Cat out, and although she agrees to go, she doesn’t make it easy for him. She’s definitely his equal in terms of smarts and self-confidence.

The big coup de main takes place near the end of the episode. Liam sneaks into the hospital and Erin’s room. Erin awakes. Although she says nothing, they both look at each other tenderly, as father and daughter would. Liam assures her that her actions have served the will of the pack, and then he smothers her with a pillow. Whaaaa….!?

s03_e0307_05_136097826283___CC___640x360

Ok, time for twenty questions. Why is Josh sure that Liam had something to do Erin’s predicament, but unsure of Aidan’s innocence? Will Josh ever learn the truth about Aidan’s innocence? Couldn’t he have just tested the blood vials for the presence of werewolf blood? Will Nora ever get a reality check? Will Liam ever get the comeuppance he deserves? Why is it ok for Liam to kill werewolves? When the heck will creepy zombie Ray pop back into the picture? How will Blake figure into Aidan’s relationship with the vampire community? Will Aidan really change Kenny? Where were the Aidan flashbacks? Just what will Nora do to Aidan now that Erin is dead and he’s dating Cat? When will Josh have to eat his words and pick Aidan over Nora? Will Bridget actually forget about spirits and Sally? Is Sally screwed now that she’s given her soul block to Bridget? Most importantly, is Sally rotting away? Because that will seriously cut into Max-Sally naughty time, and that will not sit well. With me, at least.

Ok, so that was less than twenty questions. Join me next week, friends, as we continue on this journey of self-reflection, accessorizing and hair care, and learn more about what it means to be human…and fabulous!

  • I know this was last weeks review and I appreciate it. I missed it. There was just too many loose ends and too many stories going on within stories that I almost gave up on the show. I watched it last night and the show is back! It left me speechless last night which it hasn’t done in some time. Can’t wait for next weeks!
