Award Winning TRAIN TO BUSAN Breaks Asian Box Office Records

Train to Busan has become the highest grossing Asian film of all time in Hong Kong.

The South Korean zombie blockbuster has grossed around $38.8 million (RM20 million) in Malaysia, $99 million worldwide as of September 15, 2016 after its release September 8. By August 7, it became the first Korean film of 2016 with over 10 million theatergoers.

The film has surpassed the previous record holder, 2002’s My Sassy Girl, in its first 4 days. The flick has also topped World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, in the zombie film genre on its thirteenth day of its release.

Train to Busan takes place on a bullet train between Seoul to Busan. A virus-infected woman boards the train, passing it to an attendant and creating a zombie outbreak amongst the passengers. The healthy group try to hold them off before reaching the resort town of Busan. It stars Goon You, child actor Kim Su-an, Jun Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, and Choi Wood-shik.

The film debuted at a midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2016 and won the Cheval Noir Award for Best Feature at the 20th Fantasia International film Festival in August 2016. Since its festival screenings, Fox, Sony, and other big studios in Europe have express interested in remake rights to the film. On August 18, a one and a half hour animated prequel was released in Korea and it premiered in Singapore on September 28. Seoul Station focuses on the events leading up to the live action film.

At this point, there has been no definite news for Train to Busan 2; however, a report hast stated it might start production in 2017.
