ALIEN NATION To Get Reboot

Another favorite sci-fi project from the 80s is getting the reboot treatment. 20th Century Fox will revive Alien Nation, the 1988 movie about humans and alien newcomers forced to co-exist, with the aliens having very little in the way of rights. The story centers around the first alien police officer and his racially insensitive partner. Of course, they end up respecting each other. Because that’s what the 80s were all about.

The film starred Mandy Patinkin as Detective Samuel ‘George’ Francisco and James Caan as Detective Sergeant Matthew Sykes, who learns to respect Sam Francisco as they investigate the Newcomer underworld. The movie spawned a one-season TV series with Eric Pierpoint and Gary Graham as Francisco and Sykes. After Fox TV had an economic downturn, the series was cancelled on a cliffhanger, which was picked up in Alien Nation: Dark Horizon, the first of several novels. Additional TV movies were produced following the series.

The script has been handed to Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who delivered Iron Man, as well as the remakes of Highlander and last year’s Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles.

No word on whether original producer Gale Anne Hurd will be involved in the reboot.
