Originally published in 1965, Herbert’s Dune was rejected by 23 publishers before being finally bought by Chilton Book Company, a publisher of auto repair manuals. Dune immediately proved popular, reaching far beyond the science fiction audience and becoming a must-read in mainstream literary circles of the time. Fifty years later, Herbert’s novel has established itself as an enduring classic. It consistently places on the top ranks of best genre novels, and is has arguably sold more copies than any other science fiction novel.

Folio’s 50th Anniversary Edition of Dune was not produced with those who are light of wallet in mind, its price tag coming in at a cool $125 US. Folio’s description of the commemorative tome reads:

Bound in metallic buckram, printed and blocked with a design by Sam Weber. Set in Dante with Helvetica Neue and Black Tulip display. 576 pages; 12 colour illustrations including 3 double-page spreads plus a number of black & white chapter head illustrations. Printed map endpapers by Martin Sanders. Metallic printed slipcase.10″ x 6¾”.

A second run of the 50th Anniversary Edition has been ordered by Folio and is scheduled to be available in July. Folio is presently accepting pre-orders.
