Originating in 1985 as the ASFA Awards, the Chesleys were established to recognize individual works and achievements not recognized by the Hugo, Nebula, or other literary and artistic awards. They were renamed to honor science fiction artist Chesley Bonestell following his death in 1986. Presented annually at the World Science Fiction Convention, the Chesleys are sometimes held at the North American Science Fiction Convention when the Worldcon takes place outside North America.

For more information about ASFA and the Chesley Awards, see the official ASFA website.
