TBS has ordered an interstellar animated comedy called Final Space from indie filmmaker/actor/comedian Olan Rogers, Conan O’Brien’s Conaco and New Form in association with Turner’s Studio T. This is a part of their continuing push to expand their animated programming after the success of American Dad! which is currently in their 12 season after moving from Fox. Final Space joins Tarantula, TBS’s freshman animated dark comedy about residents of a seedy hotel.
Final Space is an intergalactic saga following Gary, an astronaut, and his adorable, planet-destroying friend, Mooncake as they embark on a quest to unlock the mystery of “final space” where the entire universe ends. It is co-written by Rogers and David Sacks. Executive producing with them are O’Brien, David Kissinger, Larry Sullivan, and Jeff Ross of Conaco as well as Kathleen Grace, Melissa Schneider, and Matt Hoklotubbe of New Form.
Final Space is based off a 7-minute pilot, funded by New Form and released in April as part of their Incubator 3 series. It caught the attention of O’Brien, who invited the Nashville filmmaker to bring Final Space to TBS in Los Angeles.
Olan pitched us Final Space voicing all the characters and dancing around the conference room. It was kind of like a comedic MOON – genuinely funny and oddly heartfelt. We bought it in the room. So did other networks. We’re glad he chose us. XO.
In the pilot places Gary on his ship, counting down to auto destruct….well make “cookies” (to be more cheerful) in hopes for a wormhole to appear, allowing him to escape to another time. During the baking count down, Gary flash backs to parts of his life that have brought him to this moment which he will lose most memory of once he travels through the wormhole. His goal is to save his friends and find the last point of the universe which he picture to be a large white marshmallow castle. On a nearby ship are two characters, a boss and his minion, who the viewer can assume damaged Gary’s ship. The pilot ends with the 10,000 gig-a-ton snickerdoodle blowing up with Gary floating through the wormhole.
Final Space will debut in 2018.
