As we reported earlier this year, not only are we getting a sequel to the American Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards, but we’re also getting a new Godzilla picture from Toho. And we now have the first images of the design for the classic beast.
Shin Godzilla (or as it will be known Stateside, Godzilla: Resurgance) will be in Japanese theaters July 29, 2016. Distribution worldwide should follow shortly after that. Co-directed by Hideki Anno and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan, Neon Genesis Evangelion), with a script by Anno, the new Godzilla movie is being kept under wraps, as far as plot details go. Higuchi was also involved in the production of the Gamera films in the 1990s, so the pedigree is there.
But the design of the new Godzilla has leaked onto the web, and we have a first look at what’s being described as a “hybrid” suit.
According to Birth.Movies.Death, this is the first form Godzilla will have in the movie. They claim a source at Toho tells them that Godzilla will change as the film progresses, much like some of the other creatures in the franchise have done over the years. The third form, BMD is told, should look more like the traditional Godzilla.
HOWEVER, August Ragone at Shout! Factory TV says this is not the case, that his original story was that it takes three people to operate the Godzilla suit, and that somehow this went through the “telephone game” process into three forms for the monster. Ragone calls the escalation of his original story “fishy” and says he doesn’t think anyone at Toho would release that kind of plot information.
Shin Godzilla is the 29th movie in the franchise.
