According to a press release from Warner Bros, filming is underway on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The much-anticipated new film written by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling started principal photography in England today. This story is set in the Harry Potter universe, but is a completely new adventure. This new story is directed by David Yates who also helmed the last four Harry Potter feature films.
The story follows Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, “the wizarding world’s preeminent magizoologist, who stops in New York following his travels to find and document magical creatures.”
The script was inspired by Rowling’s Harry Potter character Newt Scamander’s Hogwarts textbook, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Much like the returning Yates, this film is being produced by David Heyman, who produced all eight of the Harry Potter features. J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves, and Lionel Wigram will also produce.
According to the press release, Oscar-winning director of photography Philippe Rousselot (Sherlock Holmes), three-time Oscar-winning production designer Stuart Craig (The English Patient, Harry Potter films), three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (Alice in Wonderland), Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Tim Burke (Gladiator, Harry Potter films), Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Christian Manz (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1), and Yates’ longtime editor Mark Day (the last four Harry Potter films) are all set to collaborate with Yates behind the scenes.
Along with Redmayne, Fantastic Beasts also stars Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice), Alison Sudol (Dig, Transparent), Dan Fogler (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Ezra Miller (Trainwreck), Samantha Morton (In America, Sweet and Lowdown), Jenn Murray (Brooklyn), newcomer Faith Wood-Blagrove as Modesty, and Colin Farrell (True Detective, Total Recall, Daredevil) as Graves.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is slated for worldwide release in 3D and IMAX on November 18, 2016.
