A Funny Thing About Spider-Man — Writers Announced

In an interview with NPR, Vacation writer/director partners John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein confirmed that they will be co-writing the next Spider-Man film for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios.

“We can finally acknowledge that,'” Daley said. “This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it.”

“We’ve been saying no comment for the last week,” Goldstein added.

The two have made their directing debut with the new Vacation sequel, but have been writing together on projects such as Horrible Bosses 2 and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, in addition to serving as producers on The New Adventures of Old Christine. Daly is also an actor on Bones, and you may remember him as Sam Weir on Freaks and Geeks.

That pedigree may offer clues as to what kind of film the Marvel Spidey will inhabit. Since Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the political thriller and Ant-Man was the heist movie, could Spider-Man be the comedy? Marvel’s Kevin Feige has said that the wit and sarcasm of the character hasn’t been fully explored yet, and mention has been made that this installment would echo a John Hughes movie (The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the original Vacation films, etc.). Feige wants more emphasis on the fact that Spider-Man’s humor is just as much of an irritation for his enemies as anything else.

Daley added, “He’s a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he’s an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he’s coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.”

The new Spider-Man swings into theaters July 28, 2017. Tom Holland will make his first appearance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, which bows May 6, 2016.
