Best-selling multi-player strategy game The Settlers of Catan will soon be settling in front of cameras.

Producer Gail Katz (The Perfect Storm, Air Force One) has acquired the film and TV rights to the game, which was developed by well-known German designer Klaus Teuber. The game has sold 22 million board versions worldwide in 30 languages and 50 countries. It also counts in excess of 1.6 billion downloads.

Game play consists of creating a community on the fictional island of Catan. Players must outwit one another and compete for the island’s scarce resources in order to dominate the other communities on the island.

“I’ve been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it,” said Katz in a statement.  “The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today.  There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative.”

Wil Wheaton says he uses the game as an “entry point” to introduce people to the world of table top gaming. Here’s the Catan episode of his online show, TableTop, so you can see how it works:

Besides the base game, there are also supplements and variation versions. The Settlers of Catan is published by Mayfair Games.
