via Variety — Warner Brothers has announced that Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman in Man of Steel 2.
This confirms long-standing rumors that the Amazon Princess would be included in the film, especially after news broke that Batman would also be part of the sequel. However, this is the first time WB has officially mentioned Wonder Woman by her cape-name. Up until this point, the rumor was that Diana would make a cameo or an appearance as Diana Prince.
At the recent Variety Entertainment & Tech Summit, Greg Silverman, Warner Bros.’ president of creative development and worldwide production, took the Wonder Woman rumor and addressed it head on: “We have been doing a lot of thinking for years about how to best use all those characters and we love them,” Silverman said. “Wonder Woman is an amazing character. I think it’s a great opportunity both for box office success, but also to have an amazingly powerful female superhero.”
Director Zach Snyder added, “Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”
Henry Cavill even mentioned his excitement over the idea that Cyborg could one day hit the big screen as part of a Justice League venture. But remember, his comments about a Superman-Batman match closely preceded the announcement that Batman would be in MOS2, so figure we’ll probably see Victor in this film as well.
Rumors continue to circulate that the Flash could also make an appearance, either as a Barry Allen cameo — which may or may not be Grant Gustin — or a full-on appearance in costume. At which point, this is no longer Man of Steel 2, or Batman vs. Superman, but Justice League.
So, the question now: which Wonder Woman are we going to get? The New 52 God of War Amazon, or Superman’s Girlfriend?
Gadot is a former Miss Israel, and is best known for her role as Gisele Harabo in the Fast and Furious film series. She’s also a veteran of the Israel Defense Forces.
